Cernavodă, also known as Axiopolis in the Hellenistic period, is a city in Constanța County, located in Dobrogea. Currently (21st century), it is an important national communications node, with a port on the Danube and host to the only nuclear power plant in Romania. Its remarkable archaeological history includes the discovery of a large Neolithic cemetery of the Hamangia culture, where the famous "Thinker" and "Seated Woman" statues were found.

The two statues from Cernavodă, the Thinker and the female statuette, were reference reproductions in international archaeological studies, signaling the importance of the Hamangia culture. A notable discovery in 1936 was the face of Hercules the Saxon in nearby quarries, suggesting a possible practice of his cult in the area during the Roman or early medieval period.

Throughout its history, the city bore the ancient name of Axiopolis, being associated with the local cult of Saint Cyril and two other martyrs mentioned in the Orthodox calendar. There is archaeological and historical evidence that this city had an active bishopric since the 6th century, subordinate to the metropolitanate and archbishopric of Tomis.

In 1882, the foundation stone was laid for the Church of the Holy Emperors Constantine and Elena in Cernavoda, completed in 1895 in the Byzantine style. It houses a famous painting by Nicolae Vermont and underwent restoration in 2001, funded by local authorities and the local community.

The church is noted for its Byzantine architecture, including its massive oak-carved temple and interior paintings depicting biblical scenes and saints. During the First World War, the church was damaged by bombing, but it was restored immediately after the war.

In the modern period, priests such as Ioan Tincoca, Constantin Coada and others played significant roles in the church and cultural life of Cernavoda, contributing to the religious and cultural education of the community through teaching, publishing and choral organization activities.

Thus, Cernavoda is not only a modern and industrial urban center, but also a place with a rich cultural and religious history, reflected in its archaeological and architectural heritage, but also in the contributions of its priests to education and local traditions.
