Limanu - Herghelia

Limanu - Herghelia is a protected area (special avifaunistic protection area - SPA) in Dobrogea, Constanța county. It is located in the north of the village of Limanu, close to the town of Mangalia and the county road DJ391, which connects Mangalia to Albești.

The area was declared a Special Avifaunistic Protection Area in 2007 by Government Decision no. 1284, being part of the Natura 2000 network in Romania. The surface of the protected area is 874 hectares.

The protected area includes various types of habitats such as rivers, lakes, marshes, peatlands, cultivated land, steppes and grasslands, providing a suitable environment for feeding, nesting and survival for numerous migratory, migratory and sedentary bird species. These species are protected according to the European Council Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds.

Among the protected bird species in the area are the plover, skylark, ducks, geese, herons, swans, gulls, terns, pelicans, cormorants and many others. The list covers a wide range of species, highlighting the richness of the biodiversity of this protected area.

Near the Limanu - Herghelia site there are numerous attractions of historical, cultural and tourist interest, such as:
- Church "St. Gheorghe" from Mangalia, built between 1914 and 1929, historical monument.
- The "Esmahan Sultan" mosque in Mangalia, the oldest Muslim place in Romania, built in 1575.
- The Roman and Roman-Byzantine citadel of Mangalia, which includes early Christian tombs, a basilica, defensive walls and the Callatis tumulus necropolis.
- The archaeological site at Vama Veche from the Roman period.
- The underwater sulphurous springs from Mangalia, natural reserves such as Movile Cave and Limanu Cave, and the Vama Veche marine reserve - 2 May.
