The National Museum of Bucovina in Suceava was established in 1900 by a private company, with the aim of preserving and exploiting for the public the historical vestiges of the city. The establishment of the museum was initiated by a group of Sucevan intellectuals, among whom were professor Iosif Fleiser, the first custodian of the museum, and priest Constantin Morariu, who fought for the establishment of a museum dedicated to Ciprian Porumbescu.

The museum had to move several times in the first years of its existence, due to the lack of a suitable space.

In 1923, the museum was taken over by the Suceava City Hall, and in 1947 it merged with the Bucovina Museum in Chernivtsi, which was then part of the Soviet Union.

During the communist period, the museum became an important propaganda tool of the regime. The museum has developed significantly, through the appearance of new sections:

The Ethnography Section, opened in 1968, capitalizes on one of the most important and valuable ethnographic areas of Romania, that of Bucovina.
The Fine Art Section, opened in 1961, presents works of painting, graphics and sculpture by some valuable Bucovina artists from the end of the 19th century, as well as Romanian painters from the period between the two world wars until today.

The Natural Sciences Section, opened in 1971, presents a permanent exhibition according to the ecological criterion of habitats (biotopes) to which samples of geology and paleontology were added.

In 1980, the museum was moved to the current building, located on Ștefan cel Mare street no. 33, and a new permanent exhibition was inaugurated, which presents the history of Romania in chronological order, starting from the Paleolithic until today.

Following the Revolution of 1989, the museum was rehabilitated and modernized, and currently offers visitors a complete picture of the history and culture of the Bucovina region.

Currently, the National Museum of Bucovina in Suceava is one of the most important museums in Romania, with a rich and diverse heritage that reflects the history, culture and traditions of the Bucovina region.
